This is mainly directed towards Omnis, but I’m also glad to hear the community’s opinions on it.

What is the future of the Community Edition?

I have read through the papers of the Omnis Developer Conference 2025, but I have not found any clues on the Community Edition. Will it be maintained, will there be updates/upgrades for current developers and users of it? Or will it just disappear silently? Is there a commitment from Omnis to rely on and base future projects on?

I think it really is a great way to start into the Omnis world, and to implement small customer projects with up to 5 concurrent users, free of license charges.

What will I tell my customers if they ask ‘will it be like this tomorrow?’

Particularly since Omnis is now moving away from lifetime licences on to subscriptions – a step I do not like (if it is subscription only), but understand.

Thank you for shedding some light on this!
    Best regards
    Uwe

    Uwe,

have a look at the Omnis.net website. Click onto the Store button in the top right corner. You will see that there are actually two Community Editions now.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Andreas

It’s a curious mix, isn’t it? The phrase “community edition” typically signals openness, accessibility, and often free access—a version meant to empower users, developers, or smaller organizations. When you tack on “Pro” and introduce a fee, it feels like a semantic tightrope: you’re elevating the offering while potentially muddying the original spirit of “community.” 🙂

It all comes down to transparency and trust. Alternative names that hit a similar note but sound less contradictory?

        Hi Mats,
I would agree that ‘Community Pro’ is a of an awkward and misleading way of naming a product – and it could have been taken as clue as to where Omnis is going take the Community edition: to a subscription paid version.

So I am glad that Birgit clarified Omnis’ commitment to the free edition.

        Best regards

      Hi Andreas,
Sorry for the late response 😳!
Yes, the shop gives a good comparison of all three versions of Omnis Studio.
But only as per now – tomorrow, one or two items might just be ‘missing’, so I was hoping for a more general statement from Omnis, which Birgit finally gave.

      Best regards
      Uwe

Hi Uwe, good question! The free of charge Omnis Studio Community Edition is important to us and the whole Omnis developer community and attracts new developers to Omnis. Therefor we will of course continue to provide it free of charge and we are lso continuing our marketing and our Ads campaign e.g. on Google.
A few months ago we even extended the free Community Edition (CE) offer: Originally the CE only included the data access module (DAM) to PostgreSQL and we are now offering the option to choose between a DAM to PostgreSQL or a DAM to MS Express.

      Hi Birgit,

Thank you for your clear commitment to the future of the free version of the Community Edition.

It is important to me & my potential customers, as a means to start ands generate business on a smaller scale.

Not everyone has the skill and the ambition to make it big…

      Best regards

      Uwe
