Omnis
Studio 4.0.3 patch is released
 |
 |
|
Raining Data is pleased to announce
the general availability of Omnis Studio version
4.0.3 Patch release. This latest
version includes a small number of enhancements
and fixes. We strongly recommend that developers
using Studio 4 should install the version 4.0.3
patch, especially those developers using Web
Client and multi-threading.
A full list of fixes appears in the ReadMe
supplied with the release, but the most
significant changes are:
The
correction of several issues to stabilize Studio
4 when used with heavy traffic,
especially when the Web Client
is being used with the multi-threaded DAMs
An
issue with the runtime cache
Updates
needed to image handling that address changes
in the next release of Mac OS X
A
new Omnis method called $getprinterlist() that
returns a list of currently installed printers
The Studio 4.0.3 patch release is available
to download only from:
www.omnis.net/downloads/patch.html
Contact your local sales
office for information about the new release
or any other issues.

David
has been busy, very busy...
 |
 |
|
Apart from writing regular columns for the
Omnis Technical newsletter, speaking at Omnis
developer conferences such as EurOmnis, and
delivering training in some far-flung locations,
Omnis guru and expert communicator David Swain
has just released the second volume of OmniScience,
his continuing series of books on a range of
Omnis programming techniques. The series is
a "must-have" for all Omnis developers
of all levels of experience.
The title of Volume II is "List Variable Definitions"
and is over 200 pages with illustrations. You
will find new and insightful information about
list variables and their uses in this latest
volume. The book is in pdf format and requires
Acrobat Reader 6.0 and it is delivered in a
StuffIt archive. Further details and information
on how to get the book, plus details about the
first volume, can be found at: www.davidswain.com/newomniscience.html
And, if this wasn't enough, David has just
completed a major cover feature for the US computer
magazine MacTech.
The article is about the challenges faced by
companies trying to manage their server databases,
and deals specifically with transferring data
from Frontbase to Openbase, using Omnis Studio
(naturally). This is a brilliant coup for David,
and Omnis of course! We urge all Omnis developers
in North America to search out a copy, or take
out a subscription since David will be writing
a regular column with the magazine.

By all accounts this year's Euromnis
conference was a big hit, and worth the conference
fees many times over. With over 80 registered
attendees, plus speakers and sponsors, the Carlton
De Brug hotel in The Netherlands was a hive
of Omnis related activity and plenty of fun
too. Omnis developers of all levels of expertise
gathered from around the world to explore the
ins and outs of Omnis coding, to learn the latest
techniques, and to share Omnis programming experiences.
We presented our plans for the next major release
of Omnis Studio, version 4.1, which will feature,
among other things, a fully compatible Unicode
version of Omnis for Windows and Mac OS X. We
also announced our intention to provide tools
for connecting to Web Services. A highlight
of the show (according to many attendees) was
a presentation by Vik Shah of The DLA
Group (Australian Omnis distributors) on the
subject of RStudio, which can serve up your
business logic, aka Omnis methods, via COM/DCOM.
