New version of Omnis Studio...
Studio v4

The next major release of Omnis Studio will be Version 4.1 that will include a number of new features and enhancements, increasing the integration, productivity and flexibility of the Studio product range. Not least, the new features include a Unicode version of Omnis and full Multipart form data capability. The major enhancements are:

• Unicode version of Omnis Studio: Many enhancements have been made to support the Unicode version of Omnis Studio 4.1. The final version of Omnis Studio 4.1 for Unicode will be released on a separate product CD and will be available under Windows and Mac OS X. The first Beta version is now available to selected developers on request.

• Multipart form data: You can now pass non-ASCII data and upload binary files, such as spreadsheets, documents, and sound files, to the Omnis Server via an HTML form using the Multipart form data type.

• Class Comparison tool: lets you compare classes in two different versions of the same Omnis library or different revisions of the same class in a VCS project. This new tool will be available in the Studio Browser or while using the Omnis VCS.

• Omnis Data Bridge for Solaris: The Omnis Data Bridge (ODB) will be available for Sun Solaris.

There are numerous other new features and enhancements in Studio 4.1, some of which will be shown at this year's EurOmnis. Later in 2005, we will release a Beta 2 version of Studio 4.1 which will have more features. If you are registered on the Omnis Developer Partner Program and would like to test Beta 1 of Omnis Studio 4.1, please go to the Beta web page and signup.

Studio Tech Tip

Introduced in Omnis Studio 4.0, Remote Studio (RStudio) is an applet technology, which provides an equivalent of remote procedure calls to an Omnis server in order to provide additional functionality.

The RStudio applet may reside either on the client or the server and can be utilised from many languages. For example, you could invoke it on a server from PERL or PHP, or invoke it on a client from VBScript, Delphi or .NET (C#, C or Visual Basic), that is, wherever COM is available. A Java version is also available.

If you are a registered developer, you can contact support and they can supply you with an example using RStudio.

Please send the editor your suggestions for featured site, plus your tech tips and any other company or product news and we'll try to mention it here.
