Mac OS X: Intel Core Duo or G5 Processor, 1GB RAM, Mac OS X version 10.4, DVD-ROM drive and 250MB free hard disk space. You can deploy Omnis Studio applications under Windows NT/2000, XP, Vista, Linux and Mac OS X. The Omnis Server, for running Omnis web applications and the Omnis web client, will run under Windows NT/2000, XP, Vista, Linux and Mac OS X. 2. Installing Omnis Studio ========================== The Omnis Studio DVD contains a folder for each different product, such as Omnis Studio itself (Unicode and non-Unicode), the Omnis Databridge, and the Web Services plug-in. The Omnis Studio folder contains a folder for Development, Runtime, and Server plus a folder for each platform supported by that configuration. The other product folders contain a folder for each supported platform. The Development version of Omnis Studio is available in different editions, that is, Standard, Enterprise, or Web, which is determined by the type of Serial number you enter when serializing Omnis. The Omnis Studio Editions are described in more detail in the Readme.txt file and on the Omnis web site: www.omnis.net. In addition, the Manuals folder contains the manuals for Omnis Studio in Acrobat PDF format. 2.1 Installing Omnis Studio under 32-bit Windows ------------------------------------------------ To install Omnis Studio under Windows NT/2000, XP, or Vista, open the Omnis Studio or Omnis Studio Unicode folder, then the Development folder, and then the Win32 folder, and run the Setup program by double-clicking on it, following the instructions provided. Please note that you should install Omnis Studio 4.3 into a new folder, not over the top of your existing Omnis folder. 2.1.1 Program and Data directories under Windows Vista ------------------------------------------------------ Due to the introduction of the User Account Control (UAC) mechanism under Windows Vista, Omnis now uses two locations for installing the Omnis executable, read-only files and files that require write access during development. The Omnis installer places all files in the correct location during installation, and changes to the product tree are made automatically the first time Omnis is run. -- Program Directory For the Omnis executable and read-only files: “C:\Program Files\RainingData\Omnis Studio xxx”. Note that executable files do not include Omnis libraries, as these often need write access. -- Data Directory This directory is for writeable files, which are placed in the \AppData\Local\ folder as follows (note the AppData folder is usually hidden, so you may need to show it using the Tools>>Folder Options option in the Windows File Manager): The location of the Data Directory is either: C:\users\name\AppData\Local\RainingData\Omnis Studio xxx or C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\RainingData\Omnis Studio xxx when Omnis is running as a service. Under Windows Vista, the Omnis installer places all the writeable files into a folder called 'firstruninstall' in the Program directory: these files are then copied to the Data directory the first time Omnis Studio is run. Note that Omnis can still run from a single location, provided that the location is not in Program Files, and you have write access to the Omnis tree in that location. 2.2 Installing Omnis Studio for Mac OS X ---------------------------------------- To install Omnis Studio for Mac OS X 10.4, open the Omnis Studio or Omnis Studio Unicode folder, then the Development folder, and then the MacOSX folder, and run the Installer program by double-clicking on it, following the instructions provided. Please note that you should install Omnis Studio 4.3 into a new folder, not over the top of your existing Omnis folder. Under Mac OS X you should note that Omnis Studio will not run correctly if you install it into a folder with a name that has over 31 characters. This restriction applies to any folder within the entire path to the Omnis application. Note that for installation of the Unicode version of Studio for Mac OS X, the path can contain non-ascii characters. 2.3 Installing Omnis Studio under Linux --------------------------------------- To install Omnis Studio for Linux, open the Omnis Studio, then the Development folder, and then the Linux folder. 2.3.1 Installation using the .rpm files. The Development, Runtime, and Server versions of Omnis Studio for Linux are called: Omnis-Studio-4.3.i386.rpm (development) Omnis-Studio-Webserver-4.3.i386.rpm (Server) Omnis-Studio-Runtime-4.3.i386.rpm (Runtime) You can install one of these directly from the DVD or copy the rpm file to your local machine and install from there. At the command line, you can run an .rpm by typing: rpm -i Alternatively, you can use a graphical rpm manager to install the .rpm file. You can also install Omnis Studio for Linux from .taz file(s) also supplied on the DVD, as described below. 2.3.2 Installation using the .taz files. The Development, Runtime, and Server versions of Omnis Studio for Linux are stored in the files called omnis.taz, omnisrt.taz, and omserver.taz, respectively. The installation process is the same for each file, as follows. Copy the appropriate .taz file to the directory in which you wish to install Omnis. At the command line type: tar -xzvf Next you need to append the Omnis Studio home directory to the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH. You also need to create a script to execute Omnis Studio. This is completed by executing the omset file using the command: ./omset A file called omnisI386 has been created in the Omnis Studio home directory. It is now possible to run Omnis Studio for Linux (either Development, Runtime, or Server) by executing the file omnisI386 using the command. ./omnisI386 2.3.3 Adding Omnis to the Gnome Desktop. An Image of the Omnis Studio Icon (studio.png) is present in the Omnis Studio home directory, this can be used on a Desktop Toolbar button to launch Omnis Studio. The following describes how you can add the Omnis program to the Gnome desktop (note this may not be true for other desktop environments). 1. Right-Click on Gnome taskbar and select 'Add New Launcher' from the menu. 2. When the 'Create launcher applet' dialog opens, enter: 'Omnis Studio' as the name 'Omnis Studio' as the comment [Installation Path]/omnisI386 as the command 3. Click the 'Icon' button and select [Installation Path]/studio.png 4. Click OK 5. Click the new applet icon from the Gnome taskbar to launch Omnis. 2.3.4 Installing Omnis Web Client under Linux. Copy the omweb.taz file to your Netscape home folder. At the command line type: tar -xzvf omweb.taz This will create an omnis folder at the same level as the plugins folder on your system and place files in both of these folders. The script also creates some symbolic links that are required to enable the use of the web client. 2.3.5 Environment variables There is an environment variable called OMNISXIDIR which if used will contain the path where the OMNISXI.INI & OMNISXI.FCI are stored. For example, you could set the variable as follows: SET OMNISXIDIR=/tmp See the Omnis Programming manual for further details about setting environment variables for database access and using Java Objects. 3. Serializing Omnis Studio =========================== When you first run Omnis Studio, you are prompted for your Name, Company name, and Serial number. Please enter your details, including the development serial number that you purchased from the Omnis store or that came with your Omnis Studio DVD. Omnis Studio 4.3 development serial numbers begin with the characters "STD" for the Standard Edition, "END" for the Enterprise Edition, or "WBD" for the Web Edition. The first time you run Omnis Studio on Linux (and also after deleting omnis.cfg) you are prompted to accept or decline the End User License Agreement. To serialize an Omnis plug-in, such as the Omnis Web Services component, you must open the Registration Details dialog using the Tools>>Change Serial Number menu option in Omnis, click on the Plug-ins tab and enter the plug-in serial number. You must restart Omnis for the plug-in serial number to take effect. 4. Evaluating Omnis Studio ========================== If you are evaluating Omnis, you should leave the Name, Company name, and Serial number fields blank and click on OK. This creates an evaluation version of Omnis which gives you access to the full Omnis development environment and GUI tools, but during the evaluation a message will appear every 10 minutes and after an hour Omnis will shut down. To evaluate Omnis further you have to restart Omnis. Alternatively, you may obtain an evaluation serial number from your local sales office, which will allow full and unlimited access to the Omnis IDE, but may be time limited. Note that it is only the Development version of Omnis Studio that will work without a serial number, as described above. To evaluate the Runtime and Server versions of Omnis Studio, you need to contact your local sales office to obtain the appropriate serial number(s). 5.
